THE SOUND (JOHN M. PERKINS BLUES) - Switchfoot
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuning: Drop D (DADGBE)

Here's all the main rhythm guitar parts, I'll get that weird solo and maybe the little
later

Main Riff for intro, verses, bridge, outro
e|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-0-00-12-0-0--0--0-0-10---------------------------------------------------|
     Palm mute the open ones

During the parts of the verse where they sing "oh, oh, oh," don't palm mute

Pre-Chorus ("Can you hear it rise up from the ground?") chords
e|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-10----5-----10----7------------------------------------------------------|
D|-10----5-----10----7------------------------------------------------------|
A|-8-----3-----8-----5------------------------------------------------------|
D|-8-----3-----8-----5------------------------------------------------------|

Chorus Part I ("This is the sound!")
e|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-0---0---0---0------------------------------------------------------------|
A|-0---0---0---0------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-0---0---0---0------------------------------------------------------------|

II "From the discontented mouths"
e|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-------------------10------7----------------------------------------------|
D|-------------------10------7----------------------------------------------|
A|-------------------8-------5----------------------------------------------|
D|-------------------8-------5----------------------------------------------|

Repeat parts I + II again

Repeat the verse again, and note that the guitar drops out at a couple parts

Repeat pre-chorus

At part II, another guitar part comes in. I believe Drew is using a Digitech Whammy here
to one octave up and playing this
e|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-/55555555555555552222222222222222----------------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
(I think the slide-up is simulated by the Whammy btw)

If you don't own a Whammy (and I suggest buying one because they're loads of fun), you
play this. It won't sound quite the same, though.
e|-/88888888888888885555555555555555----------------------------------------|
B|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Play the main riff for the solo, with some variations on what's palm-muted

Pre-chorus again

Parts I+II, then I again

The last time part II is played, Drew changes up the Whammy thing a little and plays
e|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-/5555555555555555b7777777777777777---------------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
(if you stink at bending, just sliding up to the 7 is fine)

And for you Whammy-not-havers
e|-/8888888888888888b10101010101010101010101010101010-----------------------|
B|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
    (these are 10's, NOT 1's and 0's!)

Play through the riff a few more times without the palm mute, and end on that last note
the 10th fret of the low E (or D, whatever you want to call it)

I might the rest later, but you have all the parts that are actually worth knowing for now!

l PM Palm-Mute
l . staccato
| / slide up
