Every other time this melody is played, just change the last note
of the measure as shown. Throw in an open D drone wherever you can.

Just drone with your open D string every other down-strum. It also
sounds fine to drone your A, although Isaac doesn't do this. The
drone is very audible, and I can't believe other tabs miss it.
