Have Love Will Travel Chords

(ver. 1)
Tom Petty
One of the better songs on "The Last DJ." I don't have any of the soloing, but the bulk
the song is here. And the chord placements will match the timing with the lyrics, which
is always nice, I think.

A quick word on the four chord progression that is played right before and during the
bridge -- you can play it as open chords, but I like to play it like this:

e---3/5--5/7--7--5---|
B---5/7--7/8--8--7---|
G---5/7--7/9--9--7---|
D---5/7--7/9--9--7---|
A---3/5--5/7--7--5---|
E--------------------|

It just sounds more like the recording to me, especially with the slides. Also, you can
mess around by picking the verse chords a bit. The most frequent example of this in the song
sounds something like this:

    G D Em C
e-------3-------2-------0-------0----|
B-------3-------3-------0-------1----|
G-------0-------2-------0-------0----|
D-------0-----0---------2-----2------|
A-----2---------------2-----3--------|
E---3-------2-------0----------------|

You can kind of make up your own stuff though, or just play the chords. It all sounds good.
Here's the full song.

G D Em C
You never had a chance, did you babe?
G D Em C
  So good looking, so insecure
G D Em C
And now you say you can't remember
G D Em C-D-G-D
When the lines you drew began to blur

D G C-D-G-D
And when all of this is over
D G
Should I lose you in the smoke
    C Em
  I want you to know
  C D C-D-G-D
  You were the one

          C G C G
And may my love travel... with you everywhere
            C G Am G
Baby, may my love travel... with you always

(mini solo backed by D)

G D Em C
Maggie's still tryin' to rope a tornado
G D Em C
Joe's in the backyard tryin' to keep things simple
G D Em C
And the lonely DJ's diggin' a ditch
G D Em C-D-G-D
Tryin' to keep the flames from the temple

D G C-D-G-D
Oh, and if perhaps I lose you
D G
In the smoke down the road.
    C Em
  I want you to know
  C D C-D-G-D
  You were the one.

          C G C G
And may my love travel... with you everywhere
            C G Am G
Yeah, may my love travel... with you always

(mini solo backed by D)

guitar solo)

G D Em C
How about a cheer for all those bad girls?
G D Em C
And all the boys that play that rock and roll.
G D Em C
They love it like you love Jesus.
G D Em C-D-G-D
It does the same thing to their souls

D G C-D-G-D
And when all of this is over
D G
Should I lose you in the smoke
    C Em
  I want you to know
  C D C-D-G-D
  You were the one

          C G C G
And may my love travel... with you everywhere
            C G Am G
Yeah, may my love travel... with you always
            C G C G
Baby, may my love travel... with you everywhere
            C G Am G
Yeah, may my love travel... with you always

Am G Am G
