46 & 2 Tabs

(ver. 1)
Tool
Forty-Six & 2 as recorded by TOOL

This is my first tab and I know how tricky these internet tabs can be so
I've given the counts for the tab to give you a sense of the rythm. I've
attempted to make this tab so thorough that someone who has never heard this
song could play it given that, one, they can actually play guitar and two,
they can count and understand time changes. If there is something that I've
confused you with or a part that you just don't get, then by all means feel

TUNING: low to high D,A,D,G,B,E (dropped D tuning)
Tempo:  quarter note = 80 beats per minute.  8th note = 160

On the CD the bass starts the song off with the distinct theme for the song
that is played in many variations throughout. I've included the bass riff,(I
think it's essential to this song anyway). By the way, I only include the
top three strings on my tab until I need to use the rest of them: (just like
standard tab, the lowest pitched string is on the bottom)

  	h = hammer-on		p = pull-off
	> = accent		/ or \ = slide up OR slide down
	~~~ = vibrato		( ) = sustained note
	p.h. = pinch harmonic
	pm = palm mute  	trem = trem picking (fast alternate picking)
        * = end of a measure (bar)   r = rest
	--- = tie (sustain note to next note w/o repicking)
        ^q = quarter step bend   ^.5 = half step bend (if R is after then
	^f = full step bend      ^1.5 = 1 and a half   release bend)
        g/ under a note is a grace note
	if you don't know what a grace note is
	think as if you played the wrong note
	and tried to fix it before anyone noticed.
	It's a really fast change
  Riff 1 (bass arranged for guitar)
	D_____________________________________
	A_____5____3h5____6p5____3h5___1h5____  3x
	D__0_____0____ 0______0______0________      (end riff 1)
           1  &  2 e & uh 3 e & uh 4 e & uh
        let open D ring
  Riff 1a (bass arranged for guitar)
	D___________________________________
	A_____5____3h5____6p5___10p9___6p5___
	D__0_____0_____0______0______0_______      (end riff 1a)
           1  &  2 e & uh 3 e & uh 4 e & uh
  in the above sequence while the bass plays Riff 1 for the second time
 the guitar enters with a sound envelope and a volume swell on a sustained
 open D5 (power chord):
	D__(0)______________
	A__(0)______________
	D__(0)______________
After the bass plays Riff 1 3x and Riff 1a, the guitar ends the power chord
and starts with this (very soft):  (staccato-choppy)
	D_______________________________________
	A__5___3___6_____5____3___6______1/3____     8x
	D_______________________________________
           1   &   2(e &)uh(3)e(&)uh(4 e)& uh
	pm-------------------------------
The bass Riff1 (3x) and Riff 1a is repeated twice while the guitar plays the
above.  This makes a total of 3x the bass plays [Riff 1 (3x) Riff 1a], then
guitar and bass double up to play (in 7/8 count 1,2,1,2,1,2,3 eighth notes
get the beat instead of quarter notes, kinda gives it a double time count)
  staccato (a.k.a choppy)
	D________________________________
   7/8	A__5___3___6p5___5_____3___6p5___
	D______________0_______________0_
           1   2   1 & 2 & (1) &(2)& 3 &
now it's back to 4/4:
	D________________________________________
	A__5__3___6p5____5_____3_____6__5___1p3__
	D_____________0___________________0______
	   1  &   2 e & uh (3) e (&) uh 4 e & uh
Now the bass starts back w/ the [riff 1 (3x) riff 1a] sequence and the guitar
swells in and out of some very warm sounding chords (d,f,d to be exact),I use
my volume pedal for this but the volume knob on your guitar is just as good.
  Now comes a very hard part.  The guitar and bass start out in unison and
  end up in different times, then come back together.  I've written the
  guitar part as G and the bass as B.  I've kept the notes lined up between
  the 2 parts.  I recommend that you try the bass line first because it's
  easiest to hear as it follows the same time as the drums.  If the time
  signature (7/8 and 4/4) throws you off, just play each note evenly, there
  are no rests between notes or no long notes, they're all the same length.
  I'm sorry that this part is so confusing, it's just common practice
  to make all of the notes line up on their respective beats when writing
  music for more than 1 part.  I've also added a second guitar part as the
  CD does.  Just follow the counts that I've given you and try using a
  metronome if available.
