Now here comes the tab which demonstrates the way I strum it. It is for sure
not exactly the way The National play it, but I think it comes pretty close 
to the feeling of the song. However, it's just for you to have and idea, maybe 
you like it, and if not, just do your own thing, it's music :)

I also noted the downstrokes with "d" and the upstrokes with "u", so you might 
get a better idea of the actual rhythm (always annoying with those ascii tabs).

Progression A: In the intro and first verse I play the | G   | C   | Am   | C D | 
progression like this (note that I don't actually play a D but from the C I slide 
into someting like a Dadd9add11, I like it but if you don't, just play a normal D):
