Almost mute the first notes on the second fret, to get the same sound as
big john.

After playing this 4-6 times, the verse begins. It is the same, only, the first notes 
well spaced from the rest of them, and the whole section is played 6-8 times.

If you listen to the chorus closley, (mainly in the second part of the chorus, with no 
only bass, drums, and guitar) you hear slightly muted notes. I simply play these faster, 
do as you wish with your sound strategy.

After the chorus, often little solos are played. On the first chorus, it is only one 
but  something like this:
